DESPERATE ENCOUNTERS: Trusting God even when you can’t.
It was in 1992, my first time going to Lagos, a fairly new Christian, naive, but affectionately trusting. I was to start my first industrial attachment outside eastern Nigeria.
Left my host’ place one morning to see another uncle, and was already running low in cash after few days in Lagos. Perhaps I was a bit foolhardy to have such full-throated trust, hoping to find him at home.
Sad news ! Uncle was not at home, as I had no telephone to send words to him I was to be on my way to his place. May be God was honing my faith and trust in His supreme ability to provide for me as a young Christian.
God understood my struggles and financial handicaps I guess.
Money is finished! Was I finished? Not really.
Those days, young people never had very easy access to money, but had plenty trust and faith in God especially as it was in the early years of the ‘faith-preaching-movement’ in Nigeria.
As young believers we ever believed God for everything even when odds were stark-standing in our face.
Time to go back to my host’ place. No money. What do I do?
Faith kicked in, but my instincts held me back. After minutes of hesitant decision-making, I bolted away from anything rational being suggested to me from my head, jumped into the bus, sat still, yet anxious.
Guess what? 2 poles after drive off, a man paid the conductor for himself and pointed at me, and few seconds later dropped off and I never saw him again.
It was an experience that blew my mind to this day.
Jesus the same yesterday today and forever Amen!
And right here in London, my Bus ticket had ran out not knowing, only to find out at the last leg of my journey.
Pacing the walk way praying and talking to God. Like a fairy-tale encounter, something strange happened! Exciting !!! When the next bus came round, I had noticed people were boarding and the driver was fast waving them ‘pass, pass, pass’. Eeehhhh, I quipped to myself. Ngwanu!!!
And I quickly joined in, only to realise that the driver was passing people free because the ticket machine had just packed up.
I never bothered to ask how and why the ticket machine got broken!
God can do the impossible for anyone, anywhere, anytime only if we believe.
